Top local rhumba ensemble BV Labien Musica are gradually emerging as contenders for the genre’s crown as they continued their tour of Harare’s high density areas with a show in Warren Park 1 last Saturday night. The band, which had fallen off the radar due to squabbles that resulted in a split showed that it is determined to cover its ugly footprints through a well-calculated campaign.
The Warren Park show started with a tribute to the Zimbabwe Warriors’ emphatic win over Mali which drove the crowd wild as celebrations started soon after the end of the match.
The group sent fans wild as they sang their popular tracks including “Officer Ndiregerere”, “Ma Labels Chete” and new track “Cellphone” which is accompanied by a dance which matches the song’s name.
The multi-talented crew showcased some fresh dances from new signings — Simon Kutura and Marvelous Gonzo — who were led by chief choreographer Alex Mwenda.
Revellers were kept on their feet by the hypnotic tunes belted out by Freddy Atumisi, Eugene “Tbass Kaboko” Muronzi, Patrick Yaz the drummer and multi-talented guitarist Nano Loboko.
“I have promised Zimbabwe the best of rhumba and that it is what we are giving them, every new show we see more fans coming to give their support and we thank them very much,” said Sam Ndingindi Chamangwana the band director.
Chamangwana also revealed that the outfit is set to go on a countrywide tour to bring the band closer to their appreciative fans across the country.
The “Ngwasuma Boys” as they are affectionately known by their fans, had suffered from an exodus of band members last year including King Vevela, drummer Gift “Undertaker” Kamutana, bassist George Mvurakamaruva and lead guitarist Paul Gundani who all left BV Labien to form Super Labien Musica.
