THREE years after the death of band co-founder Elvis “MaEli” Mathe, rhumba kings Insimbi ZeZhwane are preparing to launch their 11th album next month in South Africa, marking their third release since losing their celebrated frontman.
When MaEli died in 2023, many feared the group would struggle to maintain its standing following the loss of a musician widely regarded as its heartbeat, both on stage and in the studio.
Two albums later, with a third on the horizon, Insimbi ZeZhwane have reaffirmed their position among Zimbabwe’s leading rhumba acts. With the festive season approaching, the group is promising another musical storm with a seven-track album whose title is yet to be revealed.
Although Insimbi have built a loyal following over the years, rhumba fans are known for their high expectations, leaving little room for missteps in the studio. Competition among bands is equally fierce, with several acts battling for supremacy in the genre.
Had the gifted guitarist, composer and lead vocalist MaEli been alive, the album launch might have been business as usual. However, his passing has added another layer of pressure as the group seeks to preserve his legacy while maintaining its place in an increasingly competitive music scene.
Bands including Mxolisi “Mr Bones” Ndlovu, Inhlenge Zekezi and Isolezwe Express Band have already made their mark with their 2026 releases, raising the stakes for the remaining contenders.
The big question now is whether Meluleki “Brema” Moyo and his bandmates can rise to the challenge and deliver an album capable of matching the expectations of their devoted fans.
By the time Insimbi ZeZhwane release their latest offering, other acts, including Dubia Masters and Tshongokwe Masters, are also expected to have released their new projects, setting the stage for a fiercely contested festive-season showdown.
“We are bringing rain and thunder all in one with this album. We cannot wait to launch it at Madison Avenue in Rivonia, Johannesburg.
Fans back home will also have their chance on November 14, followed by an album tour that will take us to various places.
“The album explores several themes, including love, unity and life experiences, all delivered through the beautiful diction and language of Insimbi ZeZhwane. I declare that fans will love the album, and ngoDecember sobagidisa indazi,” said Brema.
The band’s previous albums, which helped propel it to stardom, include Inhlanzi Encane, Imbemba, Iseqa Mgwaqo, Inginyambila, Impande Yeminyela, Inganekwane and Umshosha Phansi. The group has also produced popular hits such as “GPS”, “Child Abuse”, “Inyeluka”, “Inhlansi” and “Infudamakwela”.
Fans have embraced the group’s lead vocalist, Frank “High Tower” Masuku, and guitarist Ergan “Magic Fingers” Mathe, whose performances have helped sustain the band’s appeal following MaEli’s death.
The two musicians will be under pressure to demonstrate that they can carry Insimbi ZeZhwane into its next chapter while honouring the legacy of the man whose talent helped build the group’s reputation.
As the festive season draws closer, the new album will provide another opportunity for the rhumba kings to reassure their supporters that, despite losing one of their founding pillars, their musical journey is far from over.
