Mtukudzi or simply Tuku to his fans has been away for the past two months and this will be his first gig in the country.
Although he was expected to perform at the Mutare Music Festival, the “Todii” singer missed out on the show to attend to a family function.
The word was that the Mutare Music Festival coincided with Sam Mtukudzi’s tombstone unveiling. Tuku lost his son Sam on March 15, 2010 in a horror crash which also claimed his friend and sound engineer Owen Chimhare.
The quartet of Tuku on acoustic, Strovas Shadaya on percussion, Sam Mataure on drums and Enoch Piroro has been touring in and outside the country drawing huge crowds.
Even as a quartet, Tuku largely depends on his longevity in the industry and music prowess to wow audiences. At 60, he shows no signs of slowing down and every time he takes to stage, fans are assured of a great time.
Fans are likely to see the other side of Tuku when he performs some of his laid back tracks which fans can sing along to. Do you still remember the love songs “Wagona” off “Tsivo” album or “Mbabvu Yangu” off “Svovi Yangu”? These are some of the songs that are likely to be on the playlist.
Added to this, Tuku is the only artiste who has collaborated with most if not all the artistes on the bill. We wonder why it has taken this long for a Tuku/Macheso duet. Tuku has done a duet with Jah Prayzah on “Sisiriya” and with Sulu on “Kwedu”.
Another popular performer is Macheso. However, fans should expect anything from the man of song after some of his band members deserted him.
Although the sound is likely to remain the same, it is the performance and vocals which are going to be different since he lost his chanter Jonas Kasamba. Besides Kasamba, Macheso also lost drummer Obert Gomba and guitarist Donald Gogo. Despite the desertion, Macheso aka Extrabasso, maintains that his act is still intact.
One good thing about Extrabasso is that he has a long list of hits which he can play around with. After all, this is a sing along gig where anything goes. It will not be surprising to see Macheso joining Tuku, Jah Prayzah or Sulu on stage. Other than that there is plenty to look forward to. What with the Sulu’s high energy performances. The “Sean Timba” hitmaker has proved to all and sundry that he is unstoppable.
After winning big at the National Arts Merit Awards, Sulu and his Orchestra Dendera Kings have featured at high-profile and private gigs almost on a weekly basis. The success has also seen Sulu launching his own clothing line which has become an instant hit.
Sulu is now his own man and no longer needs handlers leading his way. He appeals to both the young and old. His type of dendera is a bit up-tempo and easy to dance to.
Last but not least, Jah Prayzah who most critics thought was a fluke has done well since he burst on the music scene. Like or hate him, Jah Prayzah has built a firm fans base and at that level you can’t ignore him. He must have learnt a thing or two from Tuku’s humility.
The last time we checked him, Jah Prayzah was enjoying moments with his fans. Even when he shared the stage with Charles Charamba, he maintained his cool and connected well with gospel music lovers.
That alone tells you how much his music relates to different tastes whether secular or gospel. There is really so much that the 25-year-old has up his sleeves and time will tell whether he is here to stay or not.
Show promoter Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions maintained the gig will be a bit different from all the shows that have been staged at Andy Millar Hall.
“The thrust is to generate a lot of heat and excitement among the fans so we encourage people to bring their dancing shoes.
It is going to be a great outing because we have all the top artistes on one stage. Tickets are available from Chicken Slice, Goldtech Electronics, Jazz 105 and Chipaz Printers,” he said.
