The reward of doing good

Dr Nick Ohizu-The Voice of God

The act of doing good to others is one of the many expressions of humanity. In other words, doing good is one of the ways we show our love and kindness to our fellow human beings.

The act of kindness is commanded by God to ensure that the gap that misfortune and human need leaves in the lives of many is covered without delay.

In as much as doing good is a commandment and comes off as easy for some, many people are completely avoiding this irreplaceable part of humanity as the rewards are no longer easily attainable. This is because many people who have sacrificed personal comfort and resources to save or help others have been met with an immense level of ingratitude.

This ingratitude coming from the helped has caused many to question the need of kindness because the statement, “the people you help the most, end up hurting you,” seems to be proven true daily.
Do we stop doing good so that we minimize the hurt? I do not think so.

The reason many are hurt in the process is based on the misunderstanding of the commanding scripture and the degradation of human values. Many people have grown up without the basic human values and end up becoming a menace to society while others just do not know how much it costs to help so they take the kindness for granted.

The ones who find themselves in the position of the giver should also appreciate the fact that God counted them worthy to be the ones who possess the resources for charity and kindness. Blessing an ingrate should not be a reason for you to stop because there are many rewards attached.

The best way to avoid the pain of ingratitude is to adhere to the details of the words of Jesus “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” [Luke 6:31, NKJV]. This scripture directs our focus on two things:

What you want men to do to you: This indicates that doing good is a seed. It is a way of positioning acts of kindness into your future. Men indicates plural, therefore what you do for one person can return to you from many other sources.

The pain that kind people experience mostly comes from the people they helped, and many give up with the conclusion that it does not work. This is because many show kindness expecting the kindness to be returned by the recipient, no. God did not promise that the recipient will reciprocate the kindness, but God promised that men will do so. Based on this revelation, we need to refocus on the promise not the person.

God will choose the men He will use to return kindness to your future and most of the time He will not choose the person you helped. The person helped should learn to be grateful and show appreciation to the kind-hearted to encourage them to continue. However, not receiving appreciation and gratitude should never be discouraging enough to change our nature.

Giving is a gift: We need to understand that not everyone is a giver. Kindness is a virtue which can be obtained spiritually or naturally imitated. This means that someone is born with the ability to give while someone else can be taught how to give.

Most people who learnt giving through teaching give to obtain a reward while those who are gifted with the ability to give, always give irrespective of ingratitude.

You find a good example of this in the life of Jesus especially during his encounter with the 10 lepers. Only one came back to say thank you.

In as much as Jesus expressed his disappointment about the ungratefulness of the nine, it never stopped him from performing more miracles to many.

This is a true revelation of possessing the natural gift of kindness.
In the same way, we should always remember that expecting gratitude from the helped should not be the motivation for kindness but making the world a better place should be.

The people you helped might not return to say thank you, but we should not allow ingrates to change our nature.

God has many other people He can use to reward us. So, do not give up, you can only overcome evil with good.
