adminNAIROBI. – Socio-political commentator, Amos Kaburu, has urged the Kenya Revenue Authority to tax rich members of society higher than their less fortunate counterparts.“The more you earn the more we tax. People who steal from the railway, if the railway was going to cost Shillings 400 billion and they have put it at Sh 800 billion whatever they get we tax 75 percent.
“So let them steal as you tax you bring to the public sector,” he said, alluding to a controversial rail project that critics said highlighted corruption within government. Kaburu noted that the collected cash could be used to fund the free education project to benefit poor student in various public institutions in the country.
The issue of taxation has been a thorn in Kenyans’ flesh especially with county governments struggling to raise more cash for development projects in the regions.
Recent attempts to tax athletes drew sharp reaction from the athletes with the group threatening to boycott the 2016 Olympics. Kabiru’s remarks are also expected to draw a sharp opposition from the targeted group but the official said he was prepared to deal with them. – CAJ News.
