She is known from Witbank to Welkom as the first lady of Motswako, but it has been a long and hard journey to stardom for rapper, Fifi Cooper.
Right now, Fifi, real name Refilwe Mooketsishe, is the one name on everyone’s lips, after recently winning three awards – Best Female Artist; Best New Artist and Best Produced Album at the Metro FM Music Awards.
But Fifi remembers a time when she thought no one knew her name especially considering she had been on the music scene for some time and released numerous mixtapes.
“I’ve always been a singer, but I only started to rap about eight years ago,” she told The Juice.
“But when I first rapped, I was doing it for fun and never thought anyone would pick up on it. I just wrote a song and thought it’d end there.
“But when I performed it, everything changed for me and I knew I’d to keep doing this.”
Fast forward a few years, and with the help and guidance of Motswako originators HHP and Khuli Chana, Fifi Cooper who is in a male dominated industry, is the rose among the thorns and she is definitely blossoming.
“When I look back at what I’ve achieved, it’s unbelievable. But truth be told, I’ve worked really hard over the last year.
“I can count on my hand how many days in the last year I’ve actually slept. That’s how focused and busy I’ve been with trying to get to this point.
“Deep down in my heart I know I deserved all the accolades and recognition I’ve got, but it’s still amazing to me.”
She said due to her hard work, she: “hopes that people will see female rappers differently now and give us a chance.”
Fifi said even though female rappers have to work twice as hard as their male counterparts to get noticed, it is her two-year-old son – Resego that gives her the drive to work hard in the industry and make a success of her career.
“He’s inspired me to work harder and to be out there more. He’s inspired me to do my best because at the end of the day, I’m not working for myself anymore.
“I’m working hard to give him a better life,” Fifi said.
The rapper whose Truth or Dare single is topping the charts will be touring throughout the year sharing her music with her fans. – The Juice.
