The lecture series is a prelude to the Bulawayo Music Festival to be held at the Bulawayo College of Music in May.
In an interview, an official of an organisation called Cheetah Conservation, one of the presenters in the lecture series, Gianetta Purchase, said the series, dubbed The Song of the Carnivores, was part of the Bulawayo Music Festival.
She said Alliance Française de Bulawayo and the Bulawayo Music Academy were sponsoring the lecture series which will be on the five large carnivores of Zimbabwe, namely the cheetah, leopard, lion, hyena and wild dog.
Purchase said they will hold the lecture series on the third Thursday of each month at 5.15pm until 17 May, so that people may appreciate the importance of the wild carnivores.
She said they were using art, and music in particular, to draw attention to the plight of the big carnivores.
“We are also trying to foster a sense of pride that in Zimbabwe we have managed to conserve these carnivores more than anywhere in the world. Zimbabwe has an important population of these
animals. So we want people to have a desire and also encourage action to save them,” Purchase said.
She said a group would perform a song on the animals called The Song of the Carnivores, as part of raising awareness on the need for their conservation.
Tomorrow’s lecture will be on the cheetah and the topic will explore if the cat is genetically doomed.
On 16 February the lecture will be on the lion and it will focus on the impact of trophy hunting on its population, while the lectures on wild dog, leopard and spotted dog are scheduled for March, April and May respectively.
