The timeless charm of garden water features

Andrew Mangwarara

SINCE time immemorial, people have been fascinated by the presence of water near dwellings, whether indoors or out.

Beyond the ancient mysteries associated with it, incorporating a water feature into a garden offers numerous practical and aesthetic advantages.

A water feature transforms a garden into a sanctuary.

The sound of moving water brings a sense of peace and tranquillity, acting as a natural buffer against urban noise pollution.

It is no secret that water enhances beauty.

Whether it is a fountain or a pond with blooming water lilies, it provides a captivating focal point.

Water features attract local wildlife, offering birds and animals a place to drink, giving a wonderful opportunity for nature watching.

Similarly, a well-designed feature creates a microclimate, providing a cooling effect in summer and a milder atmosphere in cooler seasons. It also adds significant value to your property.

From the pleasant view of a reflective pool to the active enjoyment of swimming, water provides endless leisure possibilities.

Water can be introduced in many forms, including ponds and streams; fountains and sprouting features; bird baths and container gardens; waterfalls and reflective pools.

When erecting a water feature, such as a fountain, careful planning is essential.

You must accurately choose a site based on its impact on the rest of the garden.

The topography will determine whether the feature should be in-ground or raised.

Then, select the right components, such as pumps, cement, prefabricated basins or durable liners like black plastic.

After compacting the area, an impenetrable layer must be created to prevent leaks.

Place your rocks, pots or aquatic plants before filling the feature with water.

Note: Remember that all water features require regular maintenance to keep them in good condition and ensure the water remains clear.
