ALTHOUGH the internet is a useful and reliable information hub, it can be a bad influence if not used properly.

POTRAZ director-general, Gift Machengete, said as they roll out Community Information Centres, the internet can benefit people if used properly.

“If used irresponsibly, information communication technologies can bring more harm than good to society.

“In this regard, as the authority responsible for data protection, POTRAZ is rolling out programmes aimed at ensuring that risks associated with internet use are mitigated,” he said.

The internet exposes people to information, which includes pornographic material, and drug dealing.

“We pledge our full support in implementing the Smart Zimbabwe Masterplan and at ensuring ICTs make a meaningful impact on society.

“This is demanded by NDS1 and also contributes meaningfully towards the attainment of Vision 2030.”

The Cyber Security and Data Protection Bill, which provides for investigation and collection of evidence of cybercrime and unauthorised data collection and breaches, is currently before Parliament.

It also provides for admissibility of electronic evidence for such offences creating a technology driven business environment .

It encourages technological development and the lawful use of technology.
