The Ultimate Motor Racing showdown

Lovert Mafukure

It’s that time of the year and we all can’t wait for the ultimate racing showdown of the year, its the 3 hour endurance race. It’s the biggest motoring event of the year and its lined up for the 9th of December at the Bulawayo Motorsport Park fondly known as Falls Road circuit.

The endurance race in simple terms is like a last man standing match, the strongest man with the strongest car will last 3 hours and will take the trophy. Endurance racing is a form of motorsport meant to test the durability of the cars and the endurance of the drivers. Teams therefore have to cover the most laps within the given time period. It tests the mental, physical and vehicular fitness, its 3 hours of no holds barred racing.

This year’s 3 hour is going to be epic. We are going to witness the very first African lady face on the racing scene in Bulawayo. Her name is Morongoa Mahope and she is from South Africa. Talk about defying the odds and making history! She is the first African lady to represent South Africa outside of its borders and we can’t wait to see her in action, it’s going to be epic. Watch out for the Adrenalin Powersport tuned number 83 Kawasaki ZX6 – she will be riding on it.

A host of our usual faces and some new faces have confirmed their participation in this year’s endurance race. Oilman Calvin Rademeyer, paintman Zane shar, automotive decals master Darren Pragji, Denzil Bhana, turbo king Mano Zevgolis, Normax’s Dean Norman, Rowan Whyte just to mention a few of the drivers expected for this showdown.

Calvin Rademeyer will team up with South African Lyle Ramsay driving the Fuchs VW polo. Competitors need to worry about this man here, he recently won the Saloon class B national championship and he is indeed a competitor of note. He will fight to get more trophies out of this year.

Zane Shar needs no introduction, he is as religious as the pope on the tracks. The relationship he has with motor racing is that of a tick when it finds its prey…it sticks. He is still in the race and he is coming with his red Colourworld straight piped Toyota conquest.

Darren Pragji, the Stylin expert has been in the game for a while and he is going strong. He will be racing his 4A ge powered Datsun 1200. This man has racing fuel in his veins. His old faithful orange Datsun will get another chance prove its fitness and impress the crowd like every other time.

Not to be forgotten is Turbo King Mano Zevgolis who is better known by his record breaking 4A GZE powered Toyota MR2 on the dragstrip, he is expected as well and he will be pushing his Honda CRX.

Number 98 Mitsubishi Evo 4 will be competing and it’s non other than team Dean Norman and Byron Norman. They will be pushing the Normax motors tuned 4G63T Mitsubushi Evo 4. They will be fighting to improve their score this year as they came out forth in last year’s endurance race.

The 3 hour endurance race is traditionally sponsored by Castrol and Toyota, this year it’s no different, they are making it possible once again. Five dollars will get you a ticket and it’s free for children under the age of twelve. You have no reason not be there. Full bar and entertainment will be available, what more do you need to ignite the festive mood?

The Bulawayo Motoring club would like to urge all motorsport enthusiasts to drive safe this festive season and to race legally on the tracks in a controlled environment.

We do not need you to be another statistic on the road carnage list. Be safe, drive safe and if you have an insatiable thirst for racing bring yourself and your friends to the track- lets keep our roads safe. Race the track not the street! See you at the Bulawayo Motorsport Park!
