THE WORST PSL CLUB, WITH 25 LOSSES, WOULD HAVE SURVIVED

IF ZIFA had not intervened yesterday, the PSL would have seen the worst club in their history, somehow, surviving relegation.

Kwekwe United were relegated a long time ago, after picking just one win in the 33 matches they have played in their first dance in the PSL.

In the last two league matches, the Midlands side have shipped in nine goals – losing 1-5 at home to champions Scottland and then 0-4 to Triangle at Gibbo.

They have scored just one goal in those 180 minutes of shame.

But, somehow, Kwekwe United would have survived if the PSL had been allowed to freeze relegation this season.

A club, who have conceded 77 goals this season, would still have survived the chop.

A club, who have lost 25 games this season, would still have survived the chop.

The irony of it all is that Kwekwe United were even allowed to vote to give a voice to their quest to try and survive relegation through the back door.

That would have been an aberration.

How would the PSL leaders have told their fans that the worst club to play in the league were, somehow, not relegated when better clubs were relegated?

Let’s go back to the very beginning of the new era of the PSL in 1993.

Ziscosteel finished bottom of the table and were relegated.

They won seven games and drew eight, which means they were better than Kwekwe United.

The following year Fire Batteries finished bottom, winning four games and drawing 12, and were relegated.

In 1995 Eiffel Flates won five and drew five, finished bottom, and were relegated.

In 1996, Ziscosteel finished bottom after winning four games and drawing four and were relegated.

In ‘97 Gweru United won six and drew two, in ’98/’99 Ziscosteel won six and drew 11, in 2000 Hackney won six and drew seven, in 2001 Circle won four and drew two and in 2002 Buymore won five and drew six.

All these teams finished bottom and were relegated.

Blue Swallows (2003), Zim Saints (2004), Eiffel Flats (2005), Zim Saints (2006), Mwana Africa (2007), CAPS FC (2008), Black Rhinos (2009) and FC Victoria (2010) all finished bottom of the table and were relegated.

The worst of them, Saints, won two games.

Kiglon (2011), Quelaton (2012), Triple B (2013), Chiredzi (2014), Dongo Sawmills (2015), Border Strikers (2016), Bantu Rovers (2017), Shabanie Mine (20180 Mushowani (2019), Whawha (2021/2022), Cranborne Bullets (2023) and Arenel Movers (2024) all finished bottom of the PSL and were relegated.

The worst of them, Shabanie, won two games.

Now, Kwekwe United, with just one win in an extended league of 18 clubs, were set to survive relegation after finishing bottom of the table.
