The Young Players Looking to Drive Zimbabwe Cricket Forward

The 2022 T20 World Cup has shown Zimbabwe cricket in a positive light. The team has been competitive and entertaining and recorded a landmark win over Pakistan in the Super 12 stages.

The task for the national governing body is to build on that momentum and keep Zimbabwe in with a chance of competing in global tournaments.

Holding On

One of the immediate concerns relates to the futures of three key players. Captain Craig Ervine, plus star all-rounders Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams arrived at the World Cup at the ages of 37, 36 and 35 respectively.

By the time of the next T20 tournament, they may no longer be around. Can Zimbabwe cricket survive any transitional period or will their impending retirements halt the country’s development for now?

Zimbabwe’s Next Target

Cricket’s next major event is the 2023 edition of the 50-over World Cup which will be held in India next year. Zimbabwe have yet to qualify for the competition but, as host nation for the qualifying tournament, they are widely expected to claim a place.

How far could the side go from that point? It will be tough to compete with the World Cup favourites India, England and Australia, while New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa remain tough opponents in the ODI format.

According to the extensive list of sportsbooks affiliated with SBO.net, Zimbabwe are down among the outside bets. The betting markets offer a good option for assessing any team in a major tournament. Here, there will be changing markets along with a list of betting sites from around the world for cricket and other sports.

As the tournament draws closer, there will also be news, opinion and other useful information. With all of that knowledge available, it’s also possible to put the details to the test. Those who are happy to get involved with the markets will find that all sportsbooks on the SBO panel are ready to accept new customers.

Upon completion of a secure online form, many of those betting operators will publish a generous welcome offer. Funds will be required to cover opening bets and there is a set of deposit providers that can help.

Customer service operators are fast and efficient while account holders should be able to access additional benefits. All bookmakers offer a choice of different sports, while many will also publish live markets and ongoing promotions.

In summary, this is the site to follow the World Cup or any form of cricket betting, but can Zimbabwe offer a challenge in global tournaments moving forward?

Impressive Bowling Attack

There are some high quality young players coming through for Zimbabwe, and the majority can be found within the bowling unit. Blessing Muzarabani is a tall pace bowler who can generate steep bounce from any surface.

Brad Evans has some genuine pace and he kept his nerve in that dramatic final over win against Pakistan. Richard Ngarava helps to complete the seam bowling unit while Ryan Burl is an effective leg spinner who can score useful runs down the order.

If that bowling unit can stay fit and on form, Zimbabwe should have a competitive attack in the long-term future.

Batters Under the Spotlight

The batting unit isn’t quite so settled and it relies more on those elder statesmen – Raza, Williams and Ervine. There have been some positive moments, however, and they include a quickfire 35 from 18 balls from Wessly Madhevere in the rain-ruined game with South Africa.

There is definitely some potential with the batting unit, but the likes of Madhevere and Milton Shumba need to score more consistently. Brad Evans and Ryan Burl can score quickly in the death overs, but the top order must lay a platform.

What to Expect in 2023

The selectors will be hoping that Craig Ervine, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza can stick around for at least one more year. With youngsters developing around them, Zimbabwe have proved to be a competitive team that can cause major upsets.

Beyond the 2023 World Cup, the youngsters will need to step up, and it’s their development in the next twelve to eighteen months that will prove crucial to the future of the Zimbabwe national cricket team.
