with exclusive pieces of African attire which were showcased by Zimbabweans of all races. Hope Masike’s voice and mbira in the background resonated well with the models as they walked the ramp. Rungano Rwedu managing director Mrs Susan Matemachani said the collection they showcased at Hifa 2013 fused their signature fabric with contemporary prints and designs.
The prominent element in the collection was the zebra print which was showcased by the models in different fashion wear including jumpsuits, dresses and skirts. “The introduction of this print further reinforces the character of the Zimbabwean whose identity we are trying to capture in fashion, and other related products that fall under our Rungano Rwedu concept,” she said.
Susan said they chose to include the zebra because it represented beauty, individuality, grace, honesty and freedom which can easily be identified with the Zimbabwean people.
“This powerful animal has an ability to survive and flourish in harsh land, and realises that all challenges present a chance for growth. As Zimbabweans we have the mental ability to work around problems and barriers, rather than confronting them,” she said.
Susan said she has worked with her daughter Rumbi Matemachani, who designed most of their Hifa collection since 2009 after she opened a ready-to-wear clothing store.
Her main inspiration was to create an identity for Zimbabwe through fashion. “I am happy we managed to create a distinction between West Africa’s attire and Zimbabwean by creating African clothing that is conservative and toned down,” she added.
