HARARE’S Theatre in the Park will stage a Zambian play titled “The Last Steps” on July 24 and 25.
Written by Henry Sakala and directed by Dominic Sitamu, the play tackles corruption and injustice.
Two veteran Zambian actors – Hamalala Hamalala and Cosmas Ng’andu – feature in the play that is set to attract theatre lovers in Harare.
According to its synopsis, the production is a “must-watch” due to its relevance.
“Two prisoners are sentenced to death. One of them, Mangani, committed murder in a moment of rage and confusion,” read part of the synopsis.
“He regrets his actions and wishes the system could give him a chance to live and not be killed.
“The other prisoner, Derek, is a cold-blooded killer who blames society and his family for what he has become. He is ready to be hanged.”
Hamalala, who starred in the Zambian soap “Kabanana”, is popular with Zimbabwean audiences.
He has been involved in community awareness programmes using drama.
“I am still involved in various popular theatre projects with different organisations and government line ministries on different thematic topics cutting across health, gender, human rights, consumer right protection and governance,” Hamala said.
His counterpart Ng’andu started his career in 1986 at Jessy Mbanga Nursery School in Lusaka in a Christmas production directed by Bright Banda and the late Elijah Daka.
Admission is US$5 at the door.
