THE inaugural Thembalethu Foundation women’s soccer tournament kicks off today at Raylton Sports Club, with New Orleans and Borrow Jets wearing the favourites’ tag.
Jets finished third in the Southern Region Women’s League, one place above New Orleans and have been drawn in Pool B against Highlanders Royals and Cowdray Park Queens.
Jets open their account against Royals while New Orleans play their opening game against Sobukhazi in Pool A. Other teams in Pool A are Real Stars and Street Sets.
Tournament director Fungai Nyamutukwa-Mpfeka said: “We’re all set for the tournament which will be played over two days. The group stages and semi-finals will be played on Wednesday with the third place play-off and final set for December 22. All the teams have been issued with the tournament rules and regulations, meaning we’re all set to go.”
The tournament’s objective is to change lives and bring hope to girls through football.
Thembalethu Foundation has partnered Bakers Inn, Swivel Metal Engineering, Elicon Construction and Nokel Security, who pledged to support the tournament in kind.
The top four teams will each get high quality kit and medals. There are also individual accolades for excelling players.
