THINA MASEKO, the celebrated Plumtree-based author Sithandazile Maphosa, is once again making waves in Zimbabwean literature. Her recently launched work, Hard Work and Determination, is proof of her enduring storytelling prowess, captivating readers across generations.

Now based in South Africa, Maphosa draws deeply from her own life — marked by grit and perseverance — to craft stories that offer readers hope and strength in the face of adversity.

Born in Nyamambi Village under kraal head Livit Ncube, Maphosa’s early years were defined by hardship. Yet it was precisely these challenges that forged the resilience underpinning her literary voice.

“I write from a place of truth and lived experience. My parents’ sheer resilience inspired me to fight, dream, and keep going even when things were tough,” she shared in an interview with the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.

Her earlier works, including Bekunzima Endleleni (2018), which explores the emotional toll of infidelity on mothers, and Waphila Befungile (2020), a real-life account of perseverance, have already left a mark on the literary scene. But it is her latest book, Hard Work and Determination that she describes as a “letter to the next generation.”

“This book was inspired by both personal challenges and those I’ve seen others overcome. It’s a reminder that persistence, focus, and faith can lead to real change.”

Her stories are more than narratives — they are blueprints for survival and growth, especially for young people navigating a complex and often unforgiving world.

“I make it a point to write characters that people can see themselves in. I want the young reader in Plumtree, Soweto, or Harare to feel seen, heard, and motivated,” she said.

A passionate advocate for storytelling as a tool for empowerment, Maphosa is eager to expand her reach beyond the written word.

She is exploring opportunities to adapt her works for film and theatre and is open to collaborations with creatives both in Zimbabwe and abroad.

“Stories should move. They should leap off the page and into our lives. I’m always looking for platforms where my stories can touch more people, be it through a film, a stage play, or a podcast,” she said.

In a world where hope can often feel scarce, Maphosa is weaving it word by word—making it clear that hard work and determination are not just ideals, but essential tools for survival. — @MbuleloMpofu
