A 24-year-old man from Gutu has been sentenced to 36 years in prison by the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court for one count of robbery and another charge of rape.
He will serve 30 years effectively after six years were suspended.
The State heard that Alison Muyambo forced one of the occupants to open the complainant’s door.
Muyambo went straight to the bedroom where he ransacked the room in search of money and other valuables.
He could not find money and he took the complainant’s cellphone.
The State said Muyambo ordered the complainant to remove her clothes but she refused.
He slapped the complainant once, forcing her to remove her clothes.
He ordered her to put her clothes back on and dragged her outside.
After walking for about half a kilometre, Muyambo tripped the complainant to the ground where he raped her once without protection.
He freed her after the rape.
After hearing her ordeal, fellow villagers effected a citizens arrest and handed the accused person over to the police.
