AFRO-JAZZ songstress Selmor Mtukudzi is back under the spotlight with her ninth studio album a deeply personal collection titled ‘‘Ndinenyara’’.

The project, which Selmor describes as “a reflection of my life,” brings together raw emotion, cultural depth, and a touch of family legacy.

“This album is about my life,” she said in an interview with Zimpapers Entertainment Hub.

“I’m sharing my story with the world, things I have experienced and things I have seen. It’s personal, real and emotional.”

‘‘Ndinenyara’’, meaning “I’m shy” or “I’m humbled” in Shona, consists of nine tracks, each narrating different experiences and life perspectives.

The album is not only rich in lyrical content but also sonically diverse, blending Afro-jazz, traditional rhythms, and modern influences. The track list includes ‘‘Ndinenyara’’, ‘‘Mwana Mwana’’, ‘‘Washinga Here?’’, ‘‘Chii Kuonda’’, ‘‘Sezvinononoka’’, ‘‘Wadya Kupi’’ (featuring Pauline), ‘‘Kugara Naamainini’’ and ‘‘Hatimire Kufara’’.

In addition to its lyrical richness, ‘‘Ndinenyara’’ also showcases Selmor’s maturing musical style grounded in the legacy of her late father, Oliver Mtukudzi, but undeniably her own.

Her vocal delivery, layered with emotion and technical precision, gives the album a timeless quality. Selmor’s decision to involve her family in the production reflects her commitment to maintaining a strong sense of identity and authenticity in her music.

“It felt good to create something meaningful with my loved ones. It made the process more natural and honest,” she said.

Though she has released eight albums prior to this one, Selmor said that this one marks a turning point, a point of reflection, growth, and grounding.

“I’ve grown through each project, but ‘Ndinenyara’ allowed me to be truly vulnerable. I hope people can feel that in the music.”

As the album begins to circulate through digital platforms and radio, anticipation is building for live performances and promotional appearances.

Fans can expect upcoming shows and visuals for key tracks.

With ‘‘Ndinenyara’’, Selmor continues to solidify her place as one of Zimbabwe’s leading female voices not just as a daughter of a legend, but as a powerful storyteller and artist in her own right. Selmor revealed that the album was recorded in the comfort of her home, with production handled by her husband, Tendai Manatsa, and their son, Ben.

“My husband Tendai and my son Ben produced the music. We recorded most of it at home,” she said, expressing pride in the family-driven collaboration. Each album she has released, Selmor said, carries its own identity.

“Every album I have done is unique in its own way. It has its own inspiration and messages,” she noted.  “This one is special because it’s close to my heart and captures so many intimate truths.”

One standout collaboration on the album is with fellow musician Pauline, featured on the track ‘‘Wadya Kupi?’’ Selmor explained that the artists she worked with are people she has built genuine relationships with over the years.

“They are people I have a relationship with in the industry. We’ve worked together on other projects and they are always willing to support me,” she said. Thematically, the album doesn’t shy away from social issues. Tracks like ‘‘Chii Kuonda?’’ and ‘‘Haunzwe Nei?’’ touch on body image and emotional numbness, while ‘‘Washinga Here?’’ is an empowering anthem about resilience and self-belief.

‘‘Sezvinononoka’’ reminds listeners about the importance of patience and faith during life’s trials.
