Zimbabwean-born singer and songwriter Thndo (Thandolwethu Emily Nomvula Sikwila), who made waves as a finalist on The Voice Australia in 2022, has released her full-length album, titled Lessons In Love.

The album, which dropped on Valentine’s Day, was launched with a special performance at Melbourne’s iconic JazzLab. Another launch is slated for June in Melbourne.

Exploring themes of love, risk, and emotional connection, Lessons In Love features previously released singles such as Fall, 4EVA, Forward, and Along The Way, which have already gained traction on Australian radio and streaming platforms.

Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz from her base in Australia, the award-winning musician and actor encouraged people to embrace love, despite its uncertainties.

“How soon is too soon to let yourself be fully immersed in the mystery of a new love? Love is a risk. It’s like diving into a body of water without knowing if you’ll sink or swim. That first leap is everything,” she said.

The singer said the 12-track album blends honest storytelling with soulful melodies, touching on themes of courage, vulnerability, and empowerment. It features the powerful vocals of the HALO Vocal Ensemble, a collaborative super-group that brings together some of Melbourne’s leading singers, adding depth to Thndo’s signature sound.

From the bravery of diving headfirst into relationships in Ocean Floor Pt 1 & 2, to the challenges explored in Along The Way and Holding On, the album captures the ups and downs of love. Tracks like Chance and Bedroom Eyes celebrate connection, while Fall and 4EVA embrace uplifting moments. The emotional closer, Purpose, written by close friend Audrey Powne, delves into the balance of motherhood, career, and relationships.

Lessons In Love is available on SoundCloud, Ditto, Bandcamp, Spotify, and YouTube.

Dubbed the “First Lady of Soul & R&B”, Thndo is a festival favourite, having performed at Bluesfest, WOMAD, Groovin the Moo, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and many more. She has also shared the stage with Leon Bridges, Allen Stone, Odette, Ngaiire, and Baker Boy.

Recently, she starred in RENT: The Musical in the role of Joanne, touring Australia. She has also appeared on Australia’s Channel 7 and 9’s Carols, ABC’s Spicks & Specks, and Foxtel’s Rockwiz. She continues to make her mark among influential Zimbabwean women in the arts, alongside Danai Gurira, Awa Khiwe, Rumbi Tauro, and Tina Masawi.

Thndo, who has previously expressed her desire to perform in Zimbabwe, is also an advocate for gender equality. Speaking on Women’s History Month, she highlighted the need for recognition and progress. — @MbuleloMpofu
