George Maponga in Masvingo
Thousands of people today thronged Masvingo provincial Heroes’ Acre in the ancient city to join the nation to commemorate those who put their lives on the block for Zimbabwe before and after independence.
The main celebrations headlined by Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Ezra Chadzamira were held in Masvingo City with similar festivities being held at various district shrines across the province.
At Masvingo Provincial Heroes’ shrine, Minister Chadzamira accompanied by service chiefs, led by 4 Infantry Brigade Commander Ephias Mahachi arriving just after 10am.
Minister Chadzamira read the Presidential speech after which he led in the laying of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the ZNA band playing liberation war songs.
Masvingo war veterans league chair Retired Major General Gibson Mashingaidze, Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chair Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa, service chiefs and Masvingo City Mayor Colleen Maboke also laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier.
After laying of wreaths, Minister Chadzamira, accompanied by service chiefs and other senior officials met relatives of the heroes and heroines interred at the provincial shrine.
Some of the people present at the shrine paid tribute to Government for the support being rendered to relatives of brave men and women sho sacfriced their lives to see a free Zimbabwe.
