THOUSANDS of families countrywide received food hampers yesterday from the Turkish Muslim humanitarian organisation, as part of this year’s Ramadan commemorations.

The hampers were distributed without regard to religion or political affiliation.

Ramadan, an important month in the Islamic calendar, observes a period of fasting, spiritual reflection and prayer.

This year’s theme is “Hope”, centred around renewal and symbolised by the tulip, a flower that represents the divine rhythm of creation and the eternal return to life and light.

The theme emphasises hope in Allah, humanity and the power of community, encouraging individuals to come together and nurture hope.

During the hamper distribution in Shamva, Abdurrahman Taha Çınar, Religious Affairs Coordinator at the Turkish Embassy, said the donations reflect the sacred trust between Zimbabwe and Türkiye.

“These donations are a sacred trust from our supporters in Türkiye to the people of Zimbabwe. Through the organisation of the Presidency of Religious Affairs and the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, these entrusted contributions were delivered to the country,” he said.

“This Ramadan initiative stands as a strong symbol of solidarity and enduring friendship between the two nations.”

Mr Çınar noted that distributions were carried out with the help of local partners to ensure they reached those most in need.

He emphasised that Türkiye continues to provide humanitarian assistance in Zimbabwe not only during Ramadan but also through annual programmes for Eid al-Adha.

In addition, Mr Çınar highlighted Türkiye’s contributions beyond food assistance, mentioning that several motorised boreholes have been drilled across the country.

These boreholes complement Government efforts to provide reliable access to clean water, especially in rural areas.

On educational cooperation, he added that hundreds of Zimbabwean students have been offered opportunities to pursue studies in Türkiye across various fields.

In another part of the country, while handing over hampers in Norton, Turkish Embassy coordinator Sheikh Adam Wadi reaffirmed their commitment to working with the Government to empower communities as Zimbabwe aims for middle-income economy status by 2030.

Recipients of the hampers expressed gratitude and called on other religious organisations to emulate this humanitarian effort.

“This is a good gesture for communities that many organisations and institutions should copy in uplifting livelihoods and shaping community development,” said Ms Fatima Golosi (69) from Chiwaridzo in Bindura.
