WHAT started as a curious child cutting up school clothes has grown into a bold fashion journey for Zimbabwean designer Sandile Ngwenya, a self-taught creative who has stitched her name into the country’s style scene.
Ngwenya did not grow up dreaming about catwalks and glamorous runways. As a child, she imagined herself becoming a doctor or lawyer. But everything changed the day she picked up scissors during her home economics classes and began experimenting with clothes.
“I couldn’t see or want anything else,” she recalls. “Everything else disappeared from my mind. I became totally thread obsessed.”
That moment sparked a passion that would shape her life.
Her rise in fashion was not smooth. She faced doubt, stereotypes and a society that often dismisses fashion as a career for people who failed elsewhere. But instead of giving up, Ngwenya used criticism as fuel.
Unlike many designers who chase trends, her inspiration first came from the colourful world of arts and crafts. Later she discovered the bold creativity of Alexander McQueen and the timeless elegance of Giorgio Armani.
“They taught me the power of an individual mind,” she says.
Those influences pushed her to design pieces that challenge stereotypes while celebrating identity.
For Ngwenya, fashion is not just about clothes, it is storytelling.
Every collection begins with a personal narrative. She sketches ideas, experiments with textures and shapes garments that express emotions without words.
“Fashion is identity made visible. It’s confidence you can wear,” she explains.
Her journey has not been without hardships. Recognition was often scarce and exploitation was common in the industry. Still, she refused to surrender.
“Doubt comes when you focus on obstacles instead of purpose. Action became my therapy,” she says.
Through tough moment, she leaned on faith and quiet encouragement from loyal clients and friends who believed in her vision.
Today her design philosophy is simple but powerful.
Elegant. Intentional. Timeless.
Looking back, Ngwenya says the biggest transformation is not only in her designs but also in her confidence as a creator.
From a curious child with scissors to a fearless fashion rebel, Sandile Ngwenya has stitched her destiny with her own hands.
