COMMENT: PROTECT OUR CHILDREN! ACT NOW Mberengwa abuse case must jolt authorities into action

THE disturbing allegations surrounding an eight-year-old girl in Yacobe Village in Mberengwa should shake every conscience in the country.

Three weeks after the issue surfaced, the public is still waiting for clear confirmation that decisive action has been taken to protect the child and investigate the claims.

That waiting is painful.

The case came to light on 19 February when allegations emerged that the minor had been sexually abused by her stepbrothers aged 10 and 15 while she was under the care of her father, Xolani Dennis Sithole.

These are extremely serious accusations. Whenever a child is allegedly abused, the response must be swift, clear and focused on protecting the victim above everything else.

Yet according to the child’s mother, Grace Moyo, the path toward justice has been filled with uncertainty.
From her base in South Africa, she says she has been unable to access her daughter after raising alarm about the alleged abuse. Each passing day has increased her anxiety about the safety and well-being of her child. The father is said to be hostile towards social workers who have tried to intervene.

The family also says that when the matter was reported, a case reference number had not been issued a week later. Explanations reportedly included officers being away on courses and records still being checked.

While administrative processes may sometimes cause delays, cases involving children require urgency.
The most important questions remain unanswered. Has the child received a medical examination? Has a docket been formally opened?

Have authorities ensured that she is safe and receiving the care she needs?
These are basic steps in handling allegations of child abuse.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko indicated he would need to hear from the station regarding the status of the case. The public now hopes that this consultation will quickly produce clear answers.

Zimbabwe has laws, institutions and professionals whose duty is to safeguard children from harm. Police officers, social welfare officials, medical practitioners and community leaders all have a role to play.

When allegations of abuse surface, co-ordination between these institutions must be immediate and visible. The mother at the centre of this case has made a simple plea. She wants her daughter safe and for the law to take its course.

That request speaks to a wider issue facing many communities. Children cannot protect themselves. They depend entirely on adults and institutions to defend them.

This is why every report of abuse must be treated with urgency and seriousness. Beyond this single case lies a powerful reminder to society.

Protecting children is not optional. It is a responsibility that must never be delayed.C
