THREE brothers from Kwekwe drowned in White-Waters Dam at Escape Resort in Gweru where they had gone to celebrate Christmas Day with their family.
The tragic incident occurred at around 3.10 pm with Anesu (19), Randal (19) and Kudzai (17) Mudondo of Plot 13 in Kwekwe drowning while their hapless parents watched.
Following the unfortunate incident, it has emerged that there were no life-savers at the resort that offers boat riding and cruising facilities.
Gweru Businessman, Mr Enos Size who is the owner of the resort said he is not responsible for the dam.
“Accidents happen. I am not the owner of the dam. There are sign posts at the entrance and other points that one can swim at their own risk,” he said.
The brothers’ father, Mr Darlington Mudondo confirmed the incident.
A visibly distraught Mr Mudondo narrated the ordeal to Sunday News.
He said on the fateful day, he drove from Kwekwe with his family to spend the Christmas holiday at White-Waters.
“We went to White-Waters Escape Resort as a family for Christmas and our children were swimming while we were roasting meat.
“At around 3.10 pm, the three children drowned. We sought help from the owners but to no avail. We then contacted the Bulawayo sub aqua unit but unfortunately the team had gone to Nembudziya in Gokwe to attend to another incident.
“The sub aqua unit later arrived at around 9 pm and conducted a search.”
When The Sunday Mail arrived at the scene early yesterday morning, other holiday makers were going about their business as usual while the Mudondo family was anxiously waiting for the sub-aqua unit to conclude the search.
The children were only retrieved at around 10 am. “We feel that our children’s lives could have been saved if there were life-savers at White-Waters,” said Mr Mudondo.
