Three police officers whose acts of misconduct were caught on video circulating on social media are under investigation.
In one video, a police officer in Victoria Falls is allegedly seen negotiating with a tourist and asking for an iPhone instead of a fine.
The second video shows two police officers allegedly assaulting a suspect while making an arrest in Kuwadzana, Harare.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said investigations into both incidents were underway.
“The ZRP assures Zimbabweans that investigations are being conducted in connection with an alleged incident involving ZRP Dzivarasekwa and a man at Bolo Shops, Kuwadzana, Phase 3, Harare,” he said.
“More details will be released in due course as Police take stern action on members who do not perform duties according to set standards and tenets of the Police Client Service Charter.
“Reference is also made to a video circulating on social media platforms purportedly showing a police officer manning a roadblock allegedly negotiating with a tourist for an iPhone instead of a fine for an alleged traffic offence.
“The ZRP has taken note of the video and has commenced investigations to establish the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigations are also aimed at identifying the police officer involved and establishing the date, time and location of the alleged incident.”
Police have been on record saying all officers involved in corrupt tendencies or abusing their duties will be arrested and face the full wrath of the law.
