WHILE the majority of Zimbabweans were celebrating on Christmas day with their families, three Bulawayo women went on a mission to give food and put smiles on homeless people’s faces in the city centre.

Miss Sithabile Gandi Ndlovu (20), Miss Nkazimulo Khumalo (25) and Miss Nicole Mkhethwa (25) drove around the streets of Bulawayo giving food to every homeless person they met from 12 noon to around 7pm.

Miss Ndlovu, a city business analyst, said they just wanted to give homeless people something to smile about on the special day.

“I just felt like it was the right thing to do. Being Christmas, everyone is out feasting with their family and friends and just like every other day in the year, the homeless have no one to take care of them and nothing really to call their own,” she said.

“It was just very important for me to share my day with them, reaching out to the less privileged has always been something close to my heart. Initially, the goal was to make sure every homeless child got something to eat on Christmas but it became bigger, literally every homeless person we came across yesterday was fed.”

Miss Ndlovu, who founded Viking Technointell Private Limited, a Pan African start-up company in the ICT industry, said the distribution of food was done in two phases.

“We set out at noon looking for homeless people and we only found a few. However, after our lunch break we managed to find more of them and the distribution went on until dark. At the end of the day, we were so happy that we managed, in our small way, to be there for the homeless people in our city and brighten their Christmas,” she said.
