THREE people, a 29-year-old man and his two children including a toddler, were killed on the spot while four others were injured when a pirating police officer was involved in an accident with his car, a Fun Cargo. The police officer, Noah Mutawu, who is stationed at Zvishavane CID section reportedly fled the scene and later walked into Zvishavane Police Traffic section to make a police report some hours after the accident had occurred.
The three deceased people from Chief Mazvihwa’s area, Zvishavane, were identified as Austin Moyo and his two children, Takunda (5) and Melta, a toddler who was in her mother’s arms when the accident occurred.
They were on their way to Zvishavane Town when the accident occurred.
The mother to the two minors was among the injured who were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital.
Repeated efforts to get full details of the circumstances surrounding the accident which occurred along the Zvishavane-Buchwa Road on Sunday last week were fruitless as the police spokesperson for Midlands province, Inspector Joel Goko said he was still to get the details from the relevant station in Zvishavane.
Police sources in Zvishavane, however, told Sunday News that the vehicle was travelling from Buchwa to Zvishavane Town with seven passengers on board when the accident occurred, about 20km outside Zvishavane Town.
“When the car was just 20km outside Zvishavane Town, it burst one of its front tyres. Mutawu, who was behind the wheel lost control of his vehicle and it overturned, killing three passengers, a man and his two children on the spot,” said the source.
The source said Mutawu, who was not injured in the accident, fled from the scene but pitched up at the Zvishavane traffic section some hours after the accident.
“Mutawu visited the police station some hours after the accident had occurred and a statement was recorded. This was after police, who attended the scene, had left the accident scene,” said the source.
Meanwhile, a relative to the three family members who died in the accident, Mr Ronald Moyo, said the family was still in a state of shock.
He said the family was still to make a follow-up to find out whether the car their relatives were travelling in had passenger insurance or not.
“We are still mourning the death of our family members in that accident and we have not made any follow-ups with the police. The information we only have at the moment is that the car in which our relatives were travelling in when the tragedy struck was a police officer’s,” he said.
