MANICALAND province scooped three medals at the just ended National Easter Darts Tournament held at Thornhill High School in Gweru.
Team Manicaland fought hard and managed to defend their title in the men’s singles though it was won by a different player. A total of three teams from Manicaland participated and these include a ladies team and two men’s teams.
Chipinge based Selesio Gunda was crowned Zimbabwe’s finest after scooping a gold medal in the men’s open singles.
In an interview, Gunga expressed happiness to have carried the provincial flag high though he said the competition was very tough.
“The competition was very tough. We played against seasoned players like David Nyemba who is one of the long serving national team members. I managed to sail through to the finals were I beat Denis Nkomo from Bulawayo Province,” he said.
Caleb Sigauke won bronze in the men’s closed singles after losing to the defending champion David Nyemba in the semi finals.
National team and Manicaland wonder girl Melody Gezana won gold in the women’s closed singles. She said: “I fought for my trophy which I had surrendered when I gave birth. I could not defend it last time since I was not able to travel with the team. The competition was very tough. The ladies are doing very well in various provinces. Midlands and Mashonaland Central Ladies gave me a tough time. I can make mention of Grace Maodza and Sibabone Mamwiri but I’m very happy for this achievement.”
Manicaland Darts Chairman Joel Marime praised the province and encouraged the team to maintain team work.
“I’m very happy. Manicaland province did very well and our performance is on a trajectory. We played as a team and there was team work. We hope to maintain the same spirit and we are working hard to gain more and more experience in order for us to do better. One of our female players Chipo Nyasha was also selected for the provisional zone six team tournament to be staged in Zambia in August,” he said.
