THREE people perished along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway this week when the driver of a Honda Fit reportedly lost control of the vehicle before it plunged into a river.
The accident occurred on April 30 at around 3am at the 55km peg.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident.
“A Honda Fit, silver in color with two passengers on board, was travelling due East towards Murehwa on April 30, 2025,” he said.
“On approaching the 55 km peg, the vehicle veered off the road to the left and plunged into Matinhe River. All the occupants were thrown out and drowned in the river,” he said.
“ZRP Murehwa Traffic Section attended the scene. The bodies of the two passengers were retrieved from the river by ZRP Murehwa traffic officers with the assistance of residents, while that of the driver was retrieved by ZRP Sub Aqua Unit,” he said.
Police have since released the names of the deceased as Stella Makanda (25) of Zimbiru Village under Chief Chinamhora in Domboshava, who is said to have sustained head injuries.
The other one who died on the spot is Lloyd Mazire (39) of New Retreat, Waterfalls, Harare, as well as Jameson Goodson (31), who was the driver, from Mungate Village, Chief Chinamhora, Domboshava, and reports say he also sustained head injuries.
Insp Chazovachiyi appealed to motorists to avoid speeding and exercise caution on the road.
