THREE armed robbers raided a company in Graniteside, Harare early Monday morning and got away with a safe containing US$50 000 cash, jewellery and four laptops. The three who were armed with a rifle and two iron bars confronted a security guard manning Obbridge Enterprises, along Edison Crescent.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the incident.
“The incident occurred around 2am and the three robbers used a wire to tie the hands of the security guard. They then locked him inside a guardroom,” he said.
The robbers then broke into one of the offices where they stole a safe, jewellery and four laptops all valued at US$80 000.
They drove off.
Insp Chibanda said the security guard failed to see the type of car the robbers were travelling in.
He said investigations were still in progress.
Police have been discouraging people, including business owners, from keeping large sums of money in their homes and premises as they could fall prey to criminals.
Several companies, shops and individuals countrywide have lost thousands of dollars and other valuables kept in safes to armed robbers.
Police said these cases needed to be stopped.
Police are also still investigating the case in which armed robbers raided Spar Supermarket at Marimba Shopping Centre in Harare recently.
They got away with over US$30 000 after blowing a safe off the wall.
The incident occurred at around 3am and no arrests have been made so far. Last month, more than 24 suspected criminals were arrested in separate incidents in Harare on allegations of committing a number of robberies, some armed, in and around the city.
