NINE women were allegedly raped and robbed by three suspects who had promised them employment in Domboshava.
The victims were allegedly raped and robbed after they responded to advertisements for shopkeepers that had been posted on social media by the suspects.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they have since arrested the three suspects.
“Detectives acted on information regarding reports of women who were being robbed and sexually abused by suspects who were purporting to offer employment to unsuspecting victims as shopkeepers in Domboshava through advertisements on social media platforms,” he said.
“The suspects would then invite the victims to Domboshava, where they would rob them of their valuables before raping them.
“The detectives proceeded to Mungate Village, where they tracked and arrested three suspects, Jameson Jackson (28), Wickson Simon (28), and Blessing Mapfuwa (24), at their residences.”
Police recovered nine women’s identification documents, six smartphones, various ladies’ wallets, two bags with various ladies’ clothes and a plastic bag containing sanitary pads, a kitchen knife and a revolver resembling a pistol that the suspects used to threaten victims.
“The suspects are linked to three cases of armed robbery and a case of rape committed in Hatcliffe and the surrounding areas,” Comm Nyathi said.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that members of the public should exercise caution when responding to job offers on social media platforms.
“We urge the public to verify the authenticity of the offers before responding to avoid falling victim to criminals.”
