The Pan African Parliament (PAP) and the AU’s African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that seeks to promote collaboration between the two organs in pursuit of a common vision progressive and prosperous Africa.
The MoU was signed by PAP president Chief Fortune Charumbira and APRM chief executive officer Ambassador Marie-Antoinette Rose Quatre after the official opening of the 5th Ordinary Session of the 6th parliament in Midrand, South Africa.
Speaking after inking the landmark MoU, Chief Charambira hailed the development as a model of institutional collaboration between AU organs in pursuit of a better and stable Africa.
Chief Charumbira noted that the MoU is a stepping stone to help PAP work with APRM to promote good governance, democracy, justice and rule of law across the African continent.
As direct representatives of the people, PAP would use its collaboration with APRM for capacity building and making sure that national governments implement people-centric policies that speak to the Agenda 2063 targets for Africa.
“This is a classic model of institutional collaboration between two AU organs and we have not been having more of such collaboration. We hope this MoU will add impetus to our quest to promote and entrench good governance in Africa as direct representatives of the people,” stated Chief Charumbira.Ambassador Rose Quatre hailed the signing of the MoU as a step towards strengthening good governance and democracy on the African continent.
She noted that the MoU paved the way for increased collaboration between her organisation and PAP, creating scope for capacity building for legislators to be able to advance a culture of good governance in their countries.
According to Ambassador Rose Quatre, the MoU with PAP will also influence the crafting of model laws by the continental legislature, which can then be adopted by AU member countries to take the Africa Agenda 2063 forward.
