One of the greatest shows at the Borrowdale Racecourse returns tomorrow when top South African spinners meet their Zimbabwean counterparts at this year’s Spin Festival starting at 12 noon. Expect a high octane show filled with thrills and spills as South Africans Sunesh of Speed & Sound, Feroz and Brian from Y & Sons do their thing. While drag racing is about speed, car spinning is about screeching tyres until they are burn out.
Representing Zimbabwe will be Goofa, Shannon, Taku as well as Isaac Mayor aka Fat Cat. Spin sensation Denzil Mayor who at 14 is the youngest spinner in Harare, will be showcasing his breathtaking stunts including jumping out of the car or sitting on the bonnet while it is in motion. Also on the line-up are stuntmen Kunnie and Warick while DJ Shy of Extraordinary League of DJs and Andy X will be behind the turntables rocking fans.
Added to the fun are fashionistas who throng the Borrowdale Racecourse to showcase their style and eye-popping outfits which leave little to imagination.
The colourful crowd will also be treated to snacks and drinks from the food stalls that will be dotted around the venue away from the madding crowd.
Proudly presented by Eventworx in association with SpinCity Zimbabwe, this would be the first major Spin Festival so far this year featuring some of the amazing stunts and a parade of different BMWs popularly known down south as gushesh.
“Our fleet of cars consists of different models of BMWs. Our festivals are made up of local spin drivers as well as a team from South Africa who come with their own vehicles to add value and colour to our shows. This high-energy sport attracts people from all social and racial backgrounds.
“The event will be a fun-filled day where all members from the family young and old can come out and experience this exhilarating high octane fest. There will be plenty of entertainment on offer with South African Channel O DJ Andy X providing the musical entertainment. Andy X is an award winning DJ who is currently resident DJ on Bassments Mix on Channel O, Africa’s biggest music television channel.
“He will also be performing that same evening at Harare premier nightclub, Club H2O at Borrowdale’s Sam Levy’s Village. At the Spin Fest, there will be plenty of stalls offering freshly prepared food and beverages for all to enjoy.
There will also be fun and games for the younger members of the family with jumping castles, clowns and face painting on offer.

This year, Spin Fest have partnered Eventworx, an events management company whose mandate is to bring quality entertainment to the public. The company has been involved with bringing in comedy acts DJs, musicians in the likes of Mafikizolo late last year.
In Zimbabwe, spinning of cars started in the 1980s when rear-wheel drive old Alfa Romeos, Datsuns and BMWs were spun in and around the Arcadia area on public streets.
One of the pioneers of this sport locally is one Isaac Meyer, who has been very involved with the motor industry for many years and specifically with the spinning and drag-racing for more than a decade.
In recent years, Spin Fests have taken this energy-packed sport and brought it into a closed and controlled environment where people could enjoy the spinning of cars without any risk of injury to spectators or drivers.
The whole purpose is to go around an enclosed track at high speed performing various stunts with the ultimate goal of ripping/blowing up the rear wheel tyres.
A variety of stunts are performed with the most difficult one being the driver jumping out of his car and doing push-ups on the roof, or opening his bonnet and standing on the engine while the car is still spinning.
