The thunder showers hitting most parts of the country will continue for this week and farmers should seek advice from agricultural extension officers in their areas, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said yesterday.
This comes as the department announced that the 2015-2016 national cloud seeding programme had started and two aircraft would be used to enhance rainfall.
Most parts of the country have been receiving rainfall since Sunday after a long dry spell which began mid last month.
The MSD predicted rainfall activity throughout the country starting last Sunday.
“Rainfall activity started on Sunday and the country should expect week long thundershowers countrywide,” the MSD said.
“Expect morning rain to cover the country with widespread afternoon and evening thundershowers. It should be hot during the day, but mild overnight.”
Significant rains were received in some parts of Mashonaland West, Midlands and Mashonaland East.
“Notable falls were reported at Lupane with a maximum of 39mm, Chinhoyi 35mm, Harare-Belvedere 32mm, Tsholotsho 27mm and Nkayi 25mm.”
Gweru, Matopos and Kariba were also among other areas that received a considerable amount of rains in the past few days.
The MSD said there was high likelihood of below normal rains in most areas in the country.
Farmers’ unions expressed relief over the recent down pours, saying the rains had come at an important time.
Various church denominations have been holding prayers for rainfall after the then Acting President Phelekezela Mphoko made the call last week.
