Afro-jazz musician “Tiae”, born Tiambiwi Ncube, delivered a standout performance at the Zim@46 Independence Gala on April 18, emerging as one of the most creative artistes with the most stage time.
Held at Minda High School grounds in Maphisa, Matabeleland South — Tiae’s birthplace — the gala provided a fitting home stage for the talented performer.
Tiae featured prominently as part of Indosakusa: The Morning Star, with the Imbube ensemble performing songs from their latest album, Unembeza. He also took to the stage alongside Maskandi musician Zinjaziyamluma, where he performed as a backing vocalist. Their energetic set drew admiration from Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South, Albert Nguluvhe, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, who both joined the artistes on stage to dance.
The versatile performer also shared the stage with jazz and Marabi legend Jeys Marabini, who delivered a polished and mature set.
Tiae said the opportunity to perform at such a significant national event in his home area was deeply meaningful.
“I was born and raised here in Maphisa, and it’s an honour for me to have been among the performers at the gala. I believe I spent the longest time on stage, as I performed in different segments with various artistes.
“Singing and dancing on stage gave me a strong sense of belonging. I felt proud and honoured to showcase my craft in front of the people who raised me. I’m a proud son of Maphisa, and I couldn’t do any less for a place that made me who I am,” said Tiae.
Marabini, who regards Tiae as a protégé, praised his growth and dedication to music.
“Tiae joined my band at the young age of 17, bringing with him raw talent, passion and a hunger to grow. Along the journey, he also became part of Indosakusa, further shaping his musical path and experience.
“To this day, my journey continues with him on board, and it’s been amazing to witness his growth into one of the finest backing vocalists in the team. At the Independence gala, he proudly represented his roots as a Kezi/Maphisa seed, showcasing his identity and heritage on stage,” said Marabini.
Zinjaziyamluma also commended Tiae, describing him as a rising force in the music scene.
“Working with Tiae, both at the gala and in general, is always amazing because he’s a talented artiste and a perfectionist. His background in Maskandi music made it easy for us to collaborate.
“People should start paying attention to his movement, as he’s heading in the right direction in the arts space,” he said.
As a solo artiste, Tiae released his debut full-length album Ithuba last year, produced in partnership with SoMuch Music. The project features standout tracks such as Izilingo, Phenduka, and Ngithethelele, offering an intimate reflection of his life experiences, cultural roots and musical journey.
