Tiger gets extension

VALHALLA. – Tiger Woods has until 10 minutes before today’s tee-off time at the US PGA to declare himself fit to play following a back injury.
The American golfer (38) withdrew from last weekend’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after jarring his back. The four-time US PGA winner requested an extension to the deadline for registration, usually 5pm on the eve of the tournament, and it was granted.

Scot Colin Montgomerie says Woods “will suffer” if he plays in Valhalla. Montgomerie, who qualified for the US PGA for the first time since 2010 by winning the first of his two senior major titles this season, told BBC Radio 5 live: “I saw the TV pictures on Sunday evening and, really, how can he play again this year, never mind within three days?” – BBC Sport.

“This is a big golf course and the rough is heavy again. He’s hitting the ball – I hate to say – not straight; he will be in the rough and he will suffer.
“Whether it’s good for his long-term future in the game to play here or not, I am not sure. Obviously we would love him to play – it’s a bigger and better event when he does.”

The 14-time major winner is due to play alongside fellow American Phil Mickelson for the first two rounds.
Woods had surgery in March, putting him out of action for three months, but had reported no problems with his back since returning in June – until last weekend.

Two weeks ago, the world number 10 finished joint 69th at the Open, his worst showing in the event as a professional.
If Woods does not play, it would be the first time in his career he has missed three of the year’s four majors.
It would also put his participation in September’s Ryder Cup in doubt.
