As a Headlands family was yet to come to terms with the loss of their daughter-in-law and preparing for her memorial service, tragedy struck when her husband hanged himself.
Gilbert Kapiya (53) disappeared from his homestead as relatives were gathered there for his wife’s memorial service.
He was later found hanging from a tree branch the following day, about 400 metres away from his homestead.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident that happened at Magurabatanai Farm in Headlands last week.
The police said prior to his death, Kapiya called his daughter, Anesu Kapiya (20), but they could not hear each other properly due to network challenges.
“On August 9, Kapiya’s relatives gathered at his homestead in preparation of a memorial service for his late wife. On August 10, Kapiya called Anesu who was asleep in her room. However, they could not clearly communicate due to network challenges.
“Sensing danger, Anesu went to her father’s bedroom but could not locate him. She informed other family members and they conducted a search. However they did not find him.
“Later during the day, Ngwaru Chiwandire of Plot 8, Magurabatani Farm, discovered the Kapiya’s body hanging from a tree branch about 400 metres from his homestead,” said Inspector Muzondo.
No foul play is suspected.
