THE Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) has issued a stern warning to growers and dealers about side marketing activities.
With farmers complaining of low prices, when compared to last year, there is a temptation to side market the tobacco in search of better prices.
TIMB also warned farmers against dealing with Classic Leaf Tobacco which is allegedly recruiting growers and buying tobacco across the country without a license. “Growers are reminded that all self-financed tobacco must be sold at an auction floor of their choice, while contracted tobacco must be sold to the financing contractor.
“May we all be advised that it is illegal to buy tobacco without a buyers’ license and such activities must be reported to TIMB.
“Side marketing undermines the integrity of the industry and has negative consequences for the economy.”
The statement added: “The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board advises that Classic Leaf Tobacco is not a licensed contractor or buyer of tobacco in Zimbabwe.
“The company is allegedly recruiting growers and buying tobacco in parts of Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Manicaland.
“Operating without a valid license is illegal. Growers are, therefore, strongly advised not to engage with any personnel recruiting or encouraging them to sell tobacco to Classic Leaf Tobacco.
“For your protection, always transact with registered and licensed and buyers only.”
