Title race still wide open: Mavunga

Manica Diamonds utility player Trevor Mavunga believes the title race is still wide open and there is still a lot of hard work required if they are to remain relevant in the race.

The Gem Boys emerged 2-0 victors over ZPC Kariba in a league encounter played at Gibbo on Saturday.

The victory meant they kept in reach with log leaders Ngezi Platinum.

Madamburo had a convincing 3-0 win over Greenfuel at Baobab to maintain their pole position. The Gem Boys are three points adrift of Ngezi. Ngezi are on 45 points.

Mavunga, who joined Manica Diamonds from giants Dynamos at the beginning of the season, has proved to be a crucial addition to the squad.

At Manica, Mavunga reunited with coach Jairos Tapera whom he once worked with at Triangle United.

“In the second half matches don’t get easier but get more difficult. Every team has a reason to play for and a certain target to achieve.

“The match even gets more difficult when your opponent is aware that you are in the championship matrix, they will try as hard as possible to give you a dent.

“That is the reason why we have to celebrate every win, this is why I feel the win against Kariba was important for us coming at the backdrop of a defeat.

“But our celebrations are only short lived as we have to fully focus on the next game and take it head on. At this stage it is very important to take every game as it comes and accumulate as many points as you can.

“There are a number of teams which are still in a good position to win the championship so we can only do ourselves good by winning as many games as we can.

“But as a team we are not worried about anyone as we aim to achieve our best each time and I believe in our squad. We can do it,” he said.
