Two of Zimbabwe’s major companies, TM Pick n Pay and CABS on Wednesday donated USD50 000 to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe as part of their contribution to fight cancer.
The funds will assist the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe to continue offering cancer treatment and hospice services to cancer patients.
TM Pick n Pay raised US$25 000 after selling 80 000 cupcakes from its outlets to support cancer patients, while CABS realised US$25 000 by donating two cents from every point of sale transaction made by customers in any Pick n Pay outlet.
Speaking at a luncheon held in Harare, TM Pick n Pay managing director Mr Malcolm Mycroft said it was important for corporate organisations to support activities and initiatives that alleviate suffering, within communities.
“As a business, we embrace the month of October, although cancer does not wait for October to kill. We are happy to partner with the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe on such an important initiative.
“It is important that as captains of industry, we need to support activities that people do not normally support.
“It is our responsibility as good corporate citizens to support activities that make people’s lives better. Looking after people that support you is the best thing that you can do as an organisation.
TM Pick n Pay embarked on the initiative in 2018 by selling 2 500 cupcakes towards the cause. This year they sold 80 000 as they consolidate their efforts to alleviate suffering for those who would have been diagnosed with cancer.
Mr Mycroft paid tribute to corporate organisations that have remained resolute in supporting communities through various corporate social responsibility programmes.
Speaking on the same occasion, CABS marketing executive, Ms Lindiwe Thebethebe said her organisation was elated to be part of such a worthy cause.
“We decided to join TM Pick N Pay for such a worthy cause, and it is gratifying to note that our donation will alleviate the suffering of some cancer patients.
“It can only get better, when more organisations come on board and support such a noble initiative.
She urged other corporate organisations to join the fight against cancer.
According to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, there has been an increase in cases of cancer in the last few years with cervical cancer, prostate and breast cancer being the most common ones. All of these forms of cancer can be treated if detected early.
