To the girl child: Coping after falling pregnant during exam time

Dr Muso

Dear Daughter

First, let me say this: a mistake does not define your future. Falling pregnant during exams is not the end of your dreams. Yes, it’s a setback — but you can rise again. You can still become the woman you were meant to be.

Accept the situation with courage
Denying it or hiding will not help. The sooner you accept your situation, the sooner you begin healing and finding a way forward. You made a mistake — you are not a mistake. Life goes on and so should you.

Speak to a trusted adult
You need guidance, love and support — not judgment. Speak to your parents, guardian or teacher. Let them know what has happened. Many will be more understanding than you think.

Don’t drop out — Make a plan
If you’re still able to write exams, do your best to finish them. Don’t give up. If it’s too difficult now, explore re-sitting them later. What matters is not giving up on your education. Pregnancy is not the end of learning.

Avoid isolation
Shame will tempt you to hide from others. Don’t isolate yourself. Stay connected with positive people who encourage you. Avoid toxic friends or voices that mock or drag you down.

Take responsibility and grow
You’re now entering motherhood, a new role. Begin to think wisely, act maturely and protect yourself from repeating the same mistake. You are still worthy of love, dignity and success — but now, your choices matter even more.

Hold on to your dreams
You can still be a teacher, doctor, engineer, entrepreneur — or anything you dream of. Many successful women fell but rose again. Let this moment be your turning point. One day, your child will look up to you and say, “My mother is a fighter.”

Stay close to God
Pray. Seek forgiveness. Ask God for strength, courage and direction. He has not given up on you — and neither should you.

Dear girl child, you may have stumbled, but you have not fallen forever. Rise. Wipe your tears. Get back up. You still have purpose. You still have a future. You still matter.
