adminZimbabwe’s tobacco marketing season closed on 27 July, with more than 140 million kg of the golden leaf valued at $514,3 million having been sold.
“The flue-cured tobacco auction clean-up sale for the 2012 marketing season will be held on Wednesday, 22 August 2012,” TIMB said in a statement, adding there was a possibility for an extension of the mop-up.
“Depending on the volume of deliveries the clean-up sale may be continued for more than one day, until all delivered tobacco has been sold,” it added.
While auction sales were concluded, contract sales are still ongoing.
A total of 140 million kg of flue-cured tobacco have so far been sold, lower than the 150 million kg target the Government had set for the 2011-2012 season.
Tobacco is one of Zimbabwe’s major agricultural exports, accounting for 10,7 percent of the GDP in the half year to June.
Major export destinations for Zimbabwean tobacco include China, UK, South Africa, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Mauritius and Russia. — New Ziana.
