Editor – I urge the Government to look into prices of mealie meal in the rural areas which have gone beyond the reach of many people.

Mealie-meal is a staple food for most rural people in Zimbabwe and this year’s drought and heatwave have rendered crop harvests next to zero.

Prices of mealie-meal in rural Dete are too high with a 10kg bag costing $12 and above and 50kg costing $60 which is beyond the reach of many.

There is a shop at a shopping centre called Tupa at Chezhou, Dete rural which used to sell a 10kg bag at $8.50 but this week it has colluded with other shops in the area and pegged the price at $12 for a 10kg bag.

With the Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe proposing a 50 percent price increase, surely-mealie meal will be totally unaffordable and mass starvation cannot be ruled out.

I plead with Government and the Grain Millers’ Association to correct the prices of mealie-meal first in the rural areas where greed of business people is beyond redemption and put in place a price monitoring team.

Donald Seka, Chezhou, Rural Dete.
