A TSHOLOTSHO couple’s fight turned tragic when their one-year-old toddler was killed after a door fell on her as they fought for her upkeep.
Taboka Sibanda (age not given) allegedly picked up a fight with his wife Sikhalaliwe Moyo, 35, on Thursday at around 9AM over the upkeep of his step-daughter who was sleeping in the same room.
Sibanda was arguing why Moyo did not take the now deceased baby, Primrose Ndlovu, to her biological father’s relatives.
They then started pushing each other.
Officer commanding Lupane District, Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo confirmed the incident on Friday which occurred in Thuli Line village under Chief Siphoso.
“We are investigating a case where a couple, during their fight caused the death of a one-year-old toddler. The man was fighting his wife questioning why he had to keep his step-daughter.
“The couple started fighting and pushing each other. There was a door on the wall of the room and as they continued pushing, the door fell on the toddler. As a result she became unconscious,” he said.
He said the couple rushed the baby to Pumula Clinic where she died on admission.
“Police attended the scene and both parents were arrested for culpable homicide. We encourage members of the public to desist from violence which in this case led to a loss of life and try engaging third parties.
“We are worried about the increasing reports of violence in our country and we urge people to solve their domestic disputes in an amicable way,” said Chief Supt Govo.
Recent reports show that cases of domestic violence have been on the increase with Bulawayo province recording six murder cases within the past three weeks.
Among the incidents, a Gwabalanda woman was stabbed to death by her estranged husband, Gellot Ncube who later hanged himself. On the same day another man from Entumbane killed his ex-wife’s boyfriend.
