A TWO-YEAR-OLD Mwenezi toddler allegedly watched helplessly as his twin sister drowned in a 20 litre bucket of water after the mother left them alone while she picked cotton in a nearby field. Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula could not be reached for comment but police sources in Mwenezi confirmed the incident which happened on Thursday last week. The toddler has been identified as Erica Moyo of Sarauro area.

The sources said on the day in question, the mother, Asalia Gumbo, 34, left her twin children, Erica and her brother playing at her homestead while she went to pick cotton, just 30 metres away.

“After some time, the boy followed but was alone. Gumbo was taken aback to see the boy coming without his sister and rushed back. Upon her arrival, she looked for Erica but could not locate her. It was after some time that she found her body in a bucket of water,” the police source said.

“Gumbo attempted to administer first aid but all was in vain. She reported the matter to other relatives who then reported to the police. The body was taken to the Neshuro Hospital mortuary for postmortem. No foul is suspected”.
