A four-year-old girl drowned in a pond in Cowdray Park suburb on Friday.
The girl, identified as Gugulethu Ndlovu, lived with her mother near Esigodweni area.
The mother, Sisasenkosi Ncube, 26, told The Chronicle that Gugulethu had gone to play near the pond with other children at around 2PM.
“My daughter had gone to play with other kids like they do everyday. I didn’t care to look for her because she used to do it every day. I was shocked to be informed that there was a girl who had drowned and l noticed it was my daughter,” said Ncube
A Chronicle news crew visited the scene and witnessed police retrieving the little girl’s body.
A resident who identified himself as T Mpofu said the city council should take action as many lives had been lost in the same manner.
“The city council should take action and do away with all the ponds that we have in this area, many children have died in this area and no action has been taken so far, almost every year at least one or two kids drown.
“As the community, residents and country as a whole we should come together and contribute towards the securing of those ponds,” said Mpofu.
Residents said the girl’s body was discovered by a grade six boy who had gone to fetch water for a garden.
They said the boy thought it was a doll and told people that there was a big doll that was in the pond.
“When we went to check in the pond we found out it was a human being before noticing it was Gugu”.
“We quickly alerted police who rushed to the scene,” said Mai Tadiwa.
