TOILET PRISON BREAK BACKFIRES: Escapee flushed back to jail

A KWEKWE inmate who thought a toilet excuse would win him freedom is back behind bars after his half-baked escape ended at a busy roundabout.

John Nyika (40) asked prison officers to let him “relieve himself” while fetching firewood along Chiundura Road on 4 August. Instead of returning, he vanished into the bush, sparking a frantic manhunt.

The fugitive’s freedom was short-lived. By 8:34pm, the ZPCS Prisons Intelligence team sniffed him out at Senderai Roundabout where he was desperately looking for transport to his rural Zhombe hideout.

“He was promptly escorted back to Kwekwe Prisons,” the National Prosecuting Authority (NPAZ) said.

Nyika was dragged before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court and slapped with seven months for the botched getaway. Three months were suspended for good behaviour, leaving him to serve four months — stacked onto the 24 months he was already doing for unlawful entry.

Authorities warned that “jailbreaks don’t pay” as the hapless escapee found himself with an even heavier sentence instead of the freedom he craved.
