“Tokwe Mukosi: The Musical” which sets out to show Zimbabwe’s preparedness in dealing with natural disasters is in the offing. A cast of 30 musicians, dancers, actors and singers including popular faces the likes of Dudu Manhenga Muparutsa, Clare Nyakudjara, Alexio Kawara and Pastor G is expected to rock the audiences when it premieres next month.
“We have an exciting collaboration which is the precursor to bigger and better things that our audiences must look forward to,” Peter Churu, a spokesperson said.
“We sing and dance when we are happy, in celebration or when we are sad and in mourning. Music and dance are powerful and have the power to bring out the real emotion of the situation while vividly illustrating and invoking individual and personal reactions to the situation,” he said.
Also included are talented students from the University of Zimbabwe Theatre Arts Department.
The musical comes in the wake of floods that destroyed homes and displaced over 2000 families while over 10 people drowned.
According to Churu, the aim of the musical is to try and alert local authorities as well as civil protection services on disaster preparedness.
“The musical has become a vehicle to help the country to introspect and put in place mechanisms to adequately deal with disasters. Should there be an Ebola outbreak, is Zimbabwe ready and prepared to save lives?” he said.
Churu said the musical was an artistic response to this human tragedy.
“There are tough questions to be asked. Cases of dire abuses of women and children abound while its business as usual for the rest of the country,” Churu said.
He said the musical will seek to help Zimbabweans to pause and reflect on this tragedy and tell the story behind and beyond the headlines.
“We have been asked why music and dance? Zimbabweans are musical and rhythmic people,” he said.
