FOR Tonderai Ndiraya, Spain is far more than a scenic getaway; it is a high-level classroom where the curriculum is elite footballing excellence. The newly appointed Chicken Inn head coach is currently immersed in a two-week attachment at La Liga giants Villarreal CF, a journey that marks yet another milestone for one of Zimbabwean football’s most ambitious and fastest-rising tacticians.
This stint in the Mediterranean sun comes at a pivotal moment, serving as the ultimate final preparation before Ndiraya dives into the relentless demands of the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season with the GameCocks.
Villarreal CF, affectionately known across the globe as the Yellow Submarine, stands as a titan of European football, particularly revered for its world-class youth academy and meticulous tactical discipline. It is an institution where long-term vision, elite player development, and cutting-edge coaching methodologies are woven into the very fabric of the club — an ideal laboratory for a coach like Ndiraya, who is hungry to refine his technical edge and tactical depth. The Zimbabwean mentor has been given a front-row seat to the inner workings of this Spanish powerhouse, absorbing the philosophies that have kept Villarreal competing at the pinnacle of the continental game.

Reflecting on his time in Spain, Ndiraya shared his insights with Athletes Sphere Global, clearly energised by the level of professionalism on display.
“We are having a good experience here at Villarreal, who are known as the Yellow Submarine. We had the opportunity to watch the match between Villarreal and Deportivo, and we learned a lot from that game. After that, we also attended training sessions for the other age groups, including the B team, the C team, Under-19s, and Under-17s,” Ndiraya noted.
He was particularly struck by the holistic approach to the club’s conveyor belt of talent.
“We have had a wonderful experience learning how these teams are developing youngsters. They are developing players in a different way from what we do back home, and we are grateful for the opportunity offered to us by Athletes Sphere. We hope to bring back the experience we have gained and share it with like-minded people so that we can help our game grow. Of course, we also had the opportunity to speak with members of the first-team technical staff and the junior teams’ technical staff, where we exchanged ideas. We also toured the infrastructure where players are developed,” said Ndiraya.
This Spanish expedition is the latest chapter in a career that has been on a steep upward trajectory. It was only in November 2024 that Ndiraya masterminded a historic league title for Simba Bhora, a triumph that solidified his status as a heavyweight in the local coaching ranks. That championship success was preceded by a three-week stint with Turkish side Kocaelispor, highlighting a man who refuses to stand still and is obsessed with professional evolution. However, the move to Bulawayo brings a different kind of heat; he inherits a Chicken Inn side that spent much of the 2025 season flirting with the trapdoor of relegation, and the arrival of a title-winning coach has naturally sent expectations through the roof at Luveve Stadium.
Ndiraya is already beginning to reshape the squad in his own image, with midfield powerhouse Vasilli Kawe and goalkeeper Tymon Mvula reportedly set to follow him to the GameCocks. The rumour mill is also buzzing with names like Genius Hute and Nigel Mupanduki, alongside former Yadah FC playmaker Marvellous Faranando, as the club looks to restock its arsenal.
Yet, the shadows of doubt remain; critics are already sharpening their pencils, questioning if Ndiraya can conjure the same magic without the massive financial backing he enjoyed in his previous post. As the 2026 season looms, this campaign is shaping up to be the definitive litmus test of his coaching credentials.
