Church of the Province of Central Africa Harare Diocese Press officer, Mr Precious Shumba, yesterday confirmed the visit.
“He will be in Zimbabwe on October 9,” he said. “He will have a service at Illsa Independent College at 9am on the day before holding a big service at the City Sports Centre at 2pm.”
CPCA Harare Diocese secretary, Reverend Clifford Dzavo, said in a statement that Archbishop Williams’ visit to the region was primarily to participate in celebrations being held in Malawi to commemorate 150 years of Anglicanism in that country.
Dr Williams’ visit has been marred by controversy, with the Anglican Diocese of Harare leader, Bishop Nolbert Kunonga, describing it as a planned attempt to “lobby for homosexuality and neo-colonialism”.
But Rev Dzavo said the visit had nothing to do with homosexuality.
“It is reaffirmed that the CPCA’s position regarding homosexuality is crystal clear,” he said. “In terms of Canon 22, marriage is between one man and one woman and in consequence, homosexuality is not acceptable in the CPCA, which comprises Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. His Grace, Right Reverend Albert Chama is the Archbishop of the CPCA, which he runs independent of Canterbury.”
